Auditing Courses
During the fall and spring semesters, currently enrolled degree-seeking Rice students, who are registered for at least one course for credit, may audit one or more courses at Rice without charge by securing permission of the instructor and by registering as an auditor with the Office of the Registrar using a Special Registration Form. During the summer sessions, enrolled Rice students may audit one or more courses at Rice at the cost of the auditor fee for Rice alumni, as noted on the Tuition and Fees page of the Bursar's Office website.
Upon completion, the audited course will appear on the student's transcript with a grade of either "AUD" or "NC." As noted in Grades, instructors report the AUD (“Audit”) grade in those instances where the auditing student has met the audit requirements of the course as defined by the instructor. A grade of NC ("No Credit") is reported in instances where the auditing student has not met the audit requirements of the course as defined by the instructor.
There are no credit hours associated with audited courses, and auditing a course does not affect a student's GPA. Requests to audit a class or to change from audit to credit or vice versa must be done by the dates and deadlines documented in the posted Academic Calendar.
