Program Learning Outcomes for the PhD/MD Coordinated Degrees Program

Upon completing the PhD degree in the field of Bioengineering, students will be able to:

  1. Acquire a graduate-level understanding of foundations in Bioengineering and apply this material across a variety of sub-disciplines.
  2. Integrate knowledge from different sources to solve a defined Bioengineering problem.
  3. Acquire deep knowledge in a sub-discipline in which they will pursue their thesis.
  4. Demonstrate professional skills in both oral and written communication.

Requirements for the PhD/MD Coordinated Degrees Program

This PhD/MD dual degree program is offered by the Rice University Bioengineering Department and Baylor College of Medicine. This coordinated degrees program prepares students for research careers in medicine. Students must initially be accepted into the program through the Baylor College of Medicine.

In certain instances, courses (or requirements) not officially listed here may be substituted upon approval of the program's academic advisor or, where applicable, the department or program's Director of Graduate Studies. Course substitutions or any exceptions to the stated official curricular requirements must be approved by the Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. Students and their academic advisors should identify and clearly document the courses to be taken.
