Requirements for the Certificate in Dual Credit Teacher Credentialing - English

The certificate in Dual Credit Teacher Credentialing - English is a graduate certificate.  For general university requirements, please see Certificates: Graduate-Level. For additional requirements, regulations, and procedures for all graduate programs, please see All Graduate Students. Students pursuing the certificate in Dual Credit Teacher Credentialing - English must complete:

  • A minimum of 6 courses (18 credit hours) of graduate-level study (graduate semester credit hours, coursework at the 500-level or above) to satisfy certificate requirements.
  • All course requirements met with Rice University coursework (transfer credit not permitted). For additional program guidelines regarding transfer credit, see the Policies tab.
  • A minimum overall GPA of 2.67 or higher in all Rice coursework
  • A minimum program GPA of 3.00 or higher in all Rice coursework that satisfies requirements for the graduate certificate with a minimum grade of B- (2.67 grade points) in each course.

The courses listed below satisfy the requirements for this certificate. In certain instances, courses not on this official list may be substituted upon approval of the certificate’s academic advisor or, where applicable, the Program Director. Course substitutions must be formally applied and entered into Degree Works by the certificate's Official Certifier. Additionally, these must be approved by the Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. Students and their academic advisors should identify and clearly document the courses to be taken.

Admission

Admission to the Certificate in Dual Credit Teacher Credentialing program is open to currently admitted Master of Liberal Studies (MLS) students. For admission as a standalone graduate certificate, qualified applicants holding a master’s degree from an accredited university or college may apply. 

Admission Requirements and Process

  • Official transcripts from all previous colleges or universities attended.
  • A minimum GPA of 3.00 from the applicant’s undergraduate work is required.
  • Completed Application for Admission.
  • $85 Application fee.
  • Active State of Texas Standard Secondary Teaching Certificate in English or History/Social Studies (see below).
  • Current resume.
  • Personal statement outlining academic and/or professional objectives in applying to the Certificate in Dual Credit Teacher Credentialing and various influences that have been important in the applicant’s intellectual development.
  • Writing sample that demonstrates the applicant’s ability to think and write critically; demonstrates coherent and concise arguments; provides support for assertions made; leads to a logical, meaningful, and clearly stated conclusion; and properly credits all ideas and quotes from sources.  Applicants are given two essay topic choices and must choose the topic related to their teaching area to prepare their essay.
  • Two letters of recommendation, each accompanied by a completed Letter of Recommendation form.
  • Application interview.

Admission Requirements - Teacher Applicants

Teacher applicants to the Certificate in Dual Credit Teacher Credentialing program must also meet the following admission standards:

  • Teacher applicants must hold an active State of Texas Standard Secondary Teaching Certificate in English or History/Social Studies.
    • Requirements for this State of Texas Standard Secondary Teaching Certificate in English or History/Social Studies credential include:
      • state-required certification exams in the subject area (English or History/Social Studies) and Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities,
      • successful completion of a state-approved educator preparation program (either as part of the bachelor’s degree or as a post-baccalaureate student), and
      • a bachelor's degree (typically in the subject area to be taught).
  • Teacher applicants must meet federally mandated No Child Left Behind (NCLB) “Highly Qualified” status by holding at least 24 credit hours of college-level coursework in the subject to be taught.

In some instances, upon completion of the Dual Credit Teacher Credentialing certificate, a standalone graduate certificate recipient may wish to apply for the Master of Liberal Studies (MLS) degree. If they do so within 3 years of completing the certificate and are approved for admission into the MLS degree program, they may petition to have their eligible certificate coursework applied toward the MLS degree. In this way, the Dual Credit Teacher Credentialing standalone graduate certificate is stackable toward the MLS degree.

Transfer Credit 

For Rice University’s policy regarding transfer credit, see Transfer Credit. Some departments and programs have additional restrictions on transfer credit. Requests for transfer credit must be approved for Rice equivalency by the appropriate academic department offering the Rice equivalent course (corresponding to the subject code of the course content) and by the Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (GPS). Students are encouraged to meet with their academic program’s advisor when considering transfer credit possibilities.

Program Transfer Credit Guidelines

Students pursuing the certificate in Dual Credit Teacher Credentialing - English should be aware of the following program-specific transfer credit guideline:

  • Transfer credit coursework cannot be applied or used to meet any of the program’s course requirements.

Opportunities for the Certificate in Dual Credit Teacher Credentialing - English

Association of Graduate Liberal Studies National Honor Society 

Certificate students who are concurrently pursuing the Master of Liberal Studies degree may be eligible for induction into the Association of Graduate Liberal Studies National Honor Society. MLS graduates who earn a 3.75 GPA or higher and have demonstrated leadership in the classroom and in the greater community are eligible for nomination.
